Mozart's young son Karl longs to leave boarding school and spend more time with his famous father. When he stumbles upon a magic traveling trunk, his wish comes unexpectedly true as he's swept back in time to Mozart's childhood and great opera The Magic Flute! Through his mesmerizing journey, Karl learns of his father's time as a traveling prodigy, his pressures from family and fame, his passion for composing, and the common bonds they both share. Two actors recreate historical incidents from Mozart's life while the NSO weaves together 23 excerpts from the master's music, including themes from The Magic Flute and other operas The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, along with some of his most important and engaging works like Ave Verum, Symphony No. 1, Clarinet Quintet, and Eine kleine Nachtmusik.
For age 5 and up.
Performance Timing: Approximately 60 minutes, with no intermission
Come early for the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo." An hour before each NSO Family Concert, young concertgoers can get up close and hands-on with the instruments they'll see played on the stage--from violins, trumpets, and oboes to trombones and percussion--in the Kennedy Center Atrium. A project of the Women's Committee for the NSO.
Stay after the 3 p.m. concerts for a Kids' Chat. Following the 3 p.m. concert, young audience members can ask questions and hear engaging stories in an up-close-and-personal talk with the concert artists.
