About

Conductor Juraj Valcuha leads Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, and Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 featuring the NSO debut of Vilde Frang--"clearly a new star in the violin firmament" (The Guardian).

About Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5:
The composer continues his obsession with the inevitability of fate with a work of maximal contrasts, sudden surprises, and driving climaxes, all expressed through vivid orchestral textures, colors, proportions, and rhythms. Subdued palettes, moments of balletic grace, and striking outbursts alternate throughout, as if tracing circles back to where the music first begins.

Barry Hearn, NSO assistant principal trombone, on Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5:
"Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony is a Romantic powerhouse that spotlights emotional extremes. From the quiet beauty of the horn solo in the second movement to the voracious energy of the low brass in the fourth, it's like a soap opera without words!"

Performance Timing: Part One - 48 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 50 min.
