About

Jesús López-Cobos, one of Spain's most distinguished conductors, leads two programs as part of the Kennedy Center festival IBERIAN SUITE: global arts remix.

THURSDAY ONLY - with Camané & Carminho (Portugal):

The NSO presents an evening of fado, sometimes called the "soul music of Portugal." This haunting music is melancholy and evocative, driven by voice and guitar. Bringing it to life are two of the greatest fadistas of today: Camané, the leading man in a new generation of Portugal's fado singers, and Carminho, a household name in Portugal. During this concert, the NSO also performs Turina's Danzas fantásticas, which celebrate the sounds of Aragon, the Basque region, and Andalusia, and Albéniz's Suite Iberia, which conjures the national sounds of the peninsula.

Steeped in the traditions of fado, Carminho is the daughter of Teresa Siqueira, a famous fado singer in her own right. Carminho is a consummate crossover artist, displaying a passion and mastery of traditional and contemporary fado, as well as other genres including Portuguese folk music, Brazilian popular music, jazz, pop, and rock. Her best-selling Fado and Alma albums have achieved platinum and gold status in her native country. Camané has toured throughout Europe and South America. His 6 million-sold albums and Portuguese Golden Globe nominations attest to his popularity and artistry.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY - with Juanita Lascarro (Colombia) & Javier Perianes (Spain):

The NSO celebrates four of Spain's finest composers--Halffter, Falla, Turina, and Albéniz--as well as Brazil's Heitor Villa-Lobos, one who personifies the flow and remix of the arts across continents.

Cristóbal Halffter's Tiento del primer tono y batalla imperial is based on two organ works by Spanish composers active in the 16th and 17th centuries. Manuel de Falla is one of Spain's best-known composers, and his Noches en los jardines de España ("Nights in the Gardens of Spain") evokes the Hispano-Arabic past of his native Andalusia. Pianist Javier Perianes, considered one of Spain's most exciting young performers, will be the soloist. Turina's Danzas fantásticas celebrates the sounds of Aragon, the Basque region, and Andalusia, while Albéniz's suite Iberia conjures the national sounds of the peninsula. Brazil's Villa-Lobos is most renowned for his series of Bachianas Brasilieras. The No. 5, with its ensemble of cellos and solo soprano, will feature Colombian rising star soprano Juanita Lascarro.
