About Ravel's Boléro:
In a Spanish tavern, a dancer's tabletop steps become increasingly animated, while the admiration of the men around her turns to lustful obsession. In Ravel's passionate ballet score, different instruments steadily crescendo its famous theme to a rambunctious, full-orchestra climax. No wonder it's been featured in everything from romantic movie interludes to Olympic ice skating championships.
Natasha Bogachek, NSO violin, on Lalo's Symphonie espagnole:
"One of my earliest childhood musical memories is a recording of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole--this is when I fell in love with the violin. I was fascinated by all the dazzling Spanish rhythms. To this day, the work brings me great joy and excitement whenever I get to hear or accompany it."
Performance Timing: Part One - 43 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 35 min.
