About Mahler's Symphony No. 9
Following a period of family tragedy and ill health, Mahler's final completed symphony attacks death head-on with profound tenderness, fury, and irony. At turns defiant and despairing, this full-evening symphony morphs from resigned nostalgia to volcanic eruptions to become a transcendent reflection on the human condition.
Steven Hendrickson, NSO principal trumpet, on Mahler Explored
"We haven't performed anything by Mahler in a couple of years. The 5th and 9th Symphonies have so much raw emotion--sadness, resignation, triumph, joy, giddiness, and tragedy are all rolled into these works. The orchestration is so colorful, and all the instruments are given a workout."
Natasha Bogachek, NSO violin, on the program:
"As a violinist, I'm always amazed at Mahler's ability to fully explore and implement all the coloristic possibilities of the string section. He takes every nuance to extreme and, in my experience, Maestro Christoph Eschenbach is the best musician to bring that out. This concert will be a very exciting journey for both the orchestra and the audience."
