About

The Playwright and the Director
Thursday, October 5, 2000, 6-8 p.m.

Have you ever wondered how theater is developed? Who the creative players are, what they do, and how long it takes to put a production together? Here's your chance to follow the evolution of a new production from start to stage! You'll be there at each key moment as the Kennedy Center prepares its new production of The Great Quillow, from development of the script to the opening of the performance. The playwright, Paulette Laufer, and director, Nick Olcott, reveal the process of adapting the book and developing the stage action for this classic story.

Development of the Designs
Thursday, October 26, 2000, 6-8 p.m.

Key members of the design team present their ideas to you, the director, and each other, and discuss the process of translating their work from idea to sketch to stage.

Working Rehearsal
Thursday, November 9, 2000, 6-8 p.m.

Watch the actors rehearse with the director, then join them in a roundtable discussion about building characters, problem solving, and their collaborative efforts during the rehearsal process.

Technical Rehearsal
Friday, November 17, 2000, 6-8 p.m.

Now everything comes together for the first time--and you'll be there in the midst of the production process during the first technical rehearsal. You'll see and hear the performers rehearsing, watch lighting and sound cues being set and integrated, and see the director making final decisions. After rehearsal, the director and designers will answer questions.

Opening Performance
Friday, November 24, 2000, 1-3 p.m.

This is it; the show is ready! See the play in its final form with the audience. Following the performance, join the designers, cast, and director at the cast party.
