About
Have you ever wondered how theater is developed? Who the creative players are, what they do, and how long it takes to put a production together? Here's your chance to follow the evolution of a new production from start to stage! You'll be there at each key moment as the Kennedy Center prepares its new youth and family production of "The Emperor's New Clothes" from development of the script to the opening performance.
The Making of an Opera (Thursday,
October 4, 2001 6-8pm)
Begin the series with Emperor's composer and librettist, Ric
Averill and director Graham Whitehead. From the opening arias to the closing
quintet, learn how this classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale was adapted
as an opera.
Development of the Designs - (Thursday,
October 25, 2001 6-8pm)
How do you pick the most versatile costumes? What lights denote
the perfect mood? From the lighting of the stage to the design of the costumes
and set, you'll get a chance to speak with the people that translate this production
from sketch to stage.
Working Rehearsal - (Thursday, November
8, 2001 6-8pm)
Watch the actors rehearse with the director during the second
week of rehearsals. Then join them in a roundtable discussion about building
characters, problem solving, and their collaborative efforts during the rehearsal
process.
Technical Rehearsal - (Friday, November
16, 2001 6-8pm)
Now everything comes together for the first time - and you'll
be there in the midst of the production process during the first technical rehearsal.
You'll see and hear the performers rehearsing, watch lighting and sound cues
being set and integrated, and see the director making final decisions. After
the rehearsal, the director and designers will answer questions.
