About
In the world of jazz it is widely known that Billy Taylor wears many professional
hats - pianist, composer, educator, broad-caster, and ambassador. We are proud
to salute him as he celebrates his 80th birthday year with this special lecture
series. Having lived most of the history of jazz, Dr. Taylor is in the unique
position of being able to transport us in time, as he traces each musical era
in his own inimitable way.
SESSION 1:
Jazz, The Early Years up to 1940's: Players to be discussed include Duke Ellington,
Ethel Waters, Slam Stewart, Stuff Smith, Eddie South, Machito, Art Tatum.)
SESSION 2:
Prebop and Bebop, 1940's and 50's Players to be discussed include Ben Webster,
Coleman Hawkings, Roy Edrigde, Candido, Billie Holiday.)
SESSION 3:
Breaking Out/New Directions, 1960's - Today Taylor's experiences as guest, broadcaster,
actor and musical director on live television including David Foster Show, WNEW,
WLIB, The Subject is Jazz (1st ever televised series on Jazz), as well as Taylor's
compositions, commissions and books penned.
