About

Early one morning in the summer of 1958, nearly 60 musicians representing three generations of jazz history showed up at 126th Street in Harlem to be photographed by Art Kane for Esquire Magazine. Among them were Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Hank Jones, Marian McPartland, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, and Mary Lou Williams. In this fascinating documentary narrated by Quincy Jones, you'll learn the story behind the world's most celebrated jazz photograph through interviews with nearly 30 of the photo's subjects, interspersed with home movies and rare archival footage. A Q&A with director Jean Bach, a veteran radio producer, follows this Academy Award–nominated film. Part of Jazz in Our Time.
