About

Patron Note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Session II: The Modernists, previously scheduled on Saturday, March 19, has been postponed until Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Theater Lab.

The story of American modern dance unfolds along "familial" lines. The evolution of the form can be traced from generation to generation and from one dancer to the next--Martha Graham to Merce Cunningham, Lester Horton to Carmen de Lavallade. This series introduces modern and contemporary dance through the work of its major figures and the tracking of dance's "family tree." Join dance writer Suzanne Carbonneau as she helps develop your eye for modern dance. Through lecture and performance videos, learn about the people, the techniques, and other elements that have shaped what we've come to know as modern dance.

Suzanne Carbonneau is a critic, essayist, and historian whose writings have appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, and other publications. She is also Scholar-in-Residence at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and the Bates Dance Festival. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University and is Professor of Performance at George Mason University.
