Critically acclaimed pianist and songwriter Cyrus Chestnut has been described as one of the best jazz pianists of his generation due to his "willingness to abandon notes and play space" (Time Magazine). Born in 1963, Chestnut started his musical career at the age of three. By age six, he was playing piano at church in his hometown of Baltimore, and by age nine, he was studying classical music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute. Known for infusing post-bop with his strong gospel roots and classical training, Chestnut "gives himself plenty of freedom to explore different emotions, while keeping the music in recognizable form" (All About Jazz).
