About
For 150 years, Verdi's passionate and romantic score has
mesmerized opera audiences throughout the world. To celebrate
the landmark anniversary, two of the world's acclaimed lyric
sopranos portary one of opera's favorite heroines. Soprano
Hei-Kyung Hong honors The Washington Opera with her debut
performance of Verdi's Violette Valery. At leading opera
houses and concert halls, critics roll out the superlatives
for this "extraordinary (The New York Times) soprano's
exquisite phrasing and meltingly lovely high notes" (Associated
Press.) And having conquered Covent Garden and other venues
her portrayal of Violetta, soprano Andrea Rost "combines
youthful beauty and seemingly limitless vocal prowess" (Chicago
Sun-Times) in her performances as Verdi's heroine.
In the glittering, decadent world of 19th-century Paris, the beautifully but fatally ill courtesan Violette Valery reveals in her mockery of love. Only when she finds true happiness with Alfredo and is begged by his father to give him up to avoid a social scandal does Violetta realize the real meaning of love. John Matz, the Anatol who charmed Vanessa this past season with a "sweet, strong and clarion tenor" (The Washington Post), shares the role of Alfredo with Julian Gavin, the "shiny-voiced lyric tenor" (Opera News) from our production of The Tales of Hoffman. Jorge Lagunes brings his "warm liquid baritone" (The Washington Post) to the role of Alfredo's father, Germont, who discovers Violetta's noble spirit too late. He shares the role with Vassily Gerello, whose voice has been hailed as having "the grandeur, tonal substance and oldfashioned clout of a truly significant instrument" (Opera Magazine).
The Washington Opera's own Giovanni Reggioli conducts Verdi's lilting and romantic score, filled with many of opera's most memorable moments, including Violetta's feverishly dazzling "Sempre libera," her poignant duet with Alfredo's father, and the haunting final act when the poverty-stricken Violetta succumbs to her illness.
