About

Zarzuela is a Spanish dramatic musical form characterized by the alternation of singing and dancing with spoken dialogue. Washington National Opera presents the often-performed Luisa Fernanda, by Federico Moreno Torroba, one of the 20th century's most accomplished adherents of the zarzuela form.

Love, rivalry, and politics combine dangerously in the revolutionary atmosphere of mid-19th century Spain, as Luisa must choose between her sense of duty and her heart's calling. Maria José Monteil stars as Luisa, alongside Maestro Plácido Domingo as Vidal, Luisa's fiancé, and Miguel Roa conducts a score full of gorgeous melodies, Spanish charm, and the suggestion of Italian verismo.

Performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
