About

WNO concludes its 2006-2007 season with the Verdi powerhouse based on the classic Shakespeare play.  Three witches prophesy that Macbeth will become king of Scotland, leading him and his wife to murder King Duncan (and, later, several others).  Lady Macbeth goes insane with guilt, while Macbeth eventually pays with his life.  This new production by director Paolo Miccichè (I vespri siciliani, Aida, Norma) features several company favorites return in leading roles.  Lado Ataneli, who debuted in 2005 as Monforte in I vespri siciliani, is Macbeth, and Paoletta Marrocu, who performed Maddalena in Andrea Chénier (2004) to critical acclaim, is Lady Macbeth.  Ukrainian bass Vitalij Kowaljow returns after a heralded performance as Giovanni da Procida in I vespri siciliani, and John Matz, who most recently appeared as Alfredo in La traviata, is Macduff.  Conducted by Renato Palumbo, this dramatic close to WNO's 51st season is part of the 2007 citywide Shakespeare in Washington festival.

Performed in Italian with English supertitles.
