About
Opera Lafayette
Ryan Brown, artistic director and conductor
George Frideric Handel composed his exquisite L'Allegro ed Il Pensieroso in 1740 to the radiant poetry
of John Milton. Opera Lafayette presents a concert performance of this pastoral masterpiece in
commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Handel's death and to celebrate Spring in Washington.
L'Allegro ed Il Pensieroso ("The Happy Man and the Pensive Man") presents a poetical and musical
dialogue between figures of joy and contemplation. The performance features sopranos Christine
Brandes and Kirsten Blaise, tenor Nicholas Phan, and baritone David Newman, along with the Opera
Lafayette Chorus and Orchestra, on period instruments, conducted by artistic director Ryan Brown.
Hailed by The Washington Post as "one of the most intellectually exciting fixtures of the Washington
music world," Opera Lafayette marks its debut season at the Kennedy Center with this rarely performed
musical gem.
Performed in English. Performance timing: Two hours, including one 15-minute intermission.
UPDATE on 3/23/09: Very limited ticket availability. Please visit the Box Office or call Instant Charge at
(202) 467-4600 for the latest information.
