About
André Grétry's Le Magnifique
Opera Lafayette's rediscovery of 18th century operatic gems delights and surprises yet again with the modern world premiere of this dazzling romantic comedy by France's most heralded composer of 18th century opéra-comique. The story, by Sedaine from Boccaccio via La Fontaine, takes place in Il Magnifico's Florence and combines tender Gallic charm with lively Italian buffo. Its celebrated "rose" scene and programmatic, parading overture set the tone for a pantomime choreographed by Catherine Turocy. A virtuoso troupe of seven actor-singers join intimate and bravura arias to fast-paced ensemble finales which drive this short three-act comedy toward its inevitably happy close. In his American debut, the extraordinary young tenor Emiliano Gonzalez Toro takes the title role, along with a stellar cast.
Concert version in French with English narration and supertitles.
Performance Timing: Act I - 50 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Act II - 45 min.
