About

Il Barbiere di Siviglia
Music by Giovanni Paisiello
Libretto by Giuseppe Petrosellini
Ryan Brown, conductor, Opera Lafayette Orchestra
Nick Olcott, director

Beaumarchais wrote his fabulously successful play in 1772, and in 1782 Giovanni Paisiello turned the French work into an Italian opera. Paisiello's The Barber of Seville debuted in St. Petersburg but soon became a hit throughout Europe. In Vienna, it inspired Mozart and Da Ponte to take up The Marriage of Figaro. The freshness and imagination of Paisiello's compact, vivacious work is apparent at every turn, from the familiar scenes involving the clever antics of Figaro and Rosina, Bartolo's bluster, and the Count's disguises. It continued to charm countless audiences well into the 19th century, only then to be overtaken in popularity by Rossini's brilliant homage.

Performance Timing: Part One - 45 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 30 min.
Semi-staged performance, sung in Italian, with Italian dialogue and English supertitles.
