Contemporary Ballet with an Edge
Chamber Dance Project, dancers & musicians makes its debut as a Washington-based ensemble in a program of vibrant contemporary ballets that mix intimacy, edge, and emotion--all set to live music. Artistic Director Diane Coburn Bruning brings together six principal dancers from major ballet companies and a superb string quartet to perform a bill highlighted by two world premieres. Argentina's acclaimed choreographer Jorge Amarante, whose work has been hailed as "riveting and powerfully daring," creates his first work for an American company, a tango-infused ballet that draws on the passionate glamour of his country's most famous dance form. Award-winning choreographer Bruning unveils her Exit Wounds: and then they came home, which explores memory and loss in a powerful male duet marked by both firece athleticism and lyrical sweep. A world premiere by Bruning for the full ensemble rounds out the program.
Chamber Dance Project, which established itself as one of New York City's most distinctive and innovative ballet companies, brings its characteristic freshness, wit, and elegantly energetic style to its new home in its inaugural Kennedy Center appearance.
Performance Timing: Part One - 40 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 35 min.
Note: There is a brief discussion with the dancers at the start of the Sat., June 28 matinee performance and all patrons and families with children are welcome. Following the matinee, patrons can meet and greet the dancers in the Hall of States Gallery.
