One of the most powerful vengeance stories of 20th-century literature, Cronica de Una Muerte Anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold) relives the assassination of Santiago Nasar, a victim of social prejudice who is killed by the Vicario twins in an attempt to defend their sisterÆs honor. The play, based on the short novel by Colombian author and Nobel Prize-winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez (adapted by Fabio Rubiano), poetically explores the connections between social prejudice, the irrationality of violence, moral codes, and the complicity of silence.

When, in the middle of his wedding night, Bayardo Saint Ramon (husband of Angela Vicario) discovers that his new wife is not a virgin, he sends her immediately to her motherÆs house. This rejection is his right, for, having lost her virginity before marriage, she is considered to be a lost woman and a disgrace to the good name of her family. During an interrogation Angela mentions the name Santiago Nasar, implicating him as the culprit of her misfortune. And so begins the chain of events that end with Nasar's eventual assassination.

Pedro and Pablo Vicario, pig butchers by profession, collect their butchering knives and set out to avenge the lost honor of their sister. Drunk from the wedding celebration, they announce their intention to the town, and hunt down Santiago Nasar in the middle of the night, taking him by surprise. The brothers tie up Santiago, carrying him through the town amongst a chorus of roosters and barking dogs. As they stab him Santiago screams for help. The entire populace watches the knifing, immobile and silent. After the brothers finally stop, Santiago stands up and somehow manages to walk into his motherÆs house, barely able to comprehend his bloody wounds. Inside, he collapses and dies, smiling innocently.

Chronicle of a Death Foretold is told through flashbacks with each character relating his or her own version of the facts. The spine-tingling and chilling crime is excruciatingly reconstructed, detail by detail. Each chronicler reveals circumstances through which any of the townspeople could have stopped the murder but did not. The final, rhetorical question asks whether or not Santiago deserved this fate, and leaves the spectator overwhelmed by the implications of these most human and moral dilemmas.
