August Wilson's KING HEDLEY II
Part of the Kennedy Center's 2000-2001 Season
JUST ANNOUNCED: Tony Award-winner (Kiss Me Kate) BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL joins the cast. He also had a Tony Nomination for Ragtime. He also appeared on Broadway in Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Jelly's Last Jam (replacing Gregory Hines), Oh, Kay! and Mail.
Tony Award-winner LESLIE UGGAMS joins the cast of King Hedley II.
August Wilson's chronicle of 20th-century African-American life continues with this majestic, operatic comic tragedy. As with Wilson's other plays, the story is set in Pittsburgh (where the play premiered to glowing reviews in January), this time in the 1980s. The title character is one of a group of neighborhood folks wrestling with Reaganomics, trying to get ahead of a dollar and stay out of the way of the violence that has begun to claim even the children in their midst.Critics are calling this "some of the wisest, most passionate writing of (Wilson's) career" (David Patrick Stearns, USA Today).
