Step right up to this thrilling reimagining of Side Show, the acclaimed 1997 Broadway musical inspired by the true life story of conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton. Developed in association with the La Jolla Playhouse, this production features new songs as well as new characters.  Chronicling their rise from freak circus attractions to famous vaudeville entertainers during the Great Depression, Side Show follows the Hilton sisters' heartwarming search for love and normalcy amidst the spectacle of fame and scrutiny of the spotlight.

Featuring music by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Bill Russell, the original production of Side Show went on to earn four Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. Directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon (Chicago, Dreamgirls, the final two Twilight films), this exciting new staging of Side Show joins a long roster of celebrated Kennedy Center musical revivals that include Ragtime (2009) and Follies (2011).

MEET THE CHARACTERS
Prepare to marvel at the show's opening number, where all the members of the Side Show "odditorium" showcase their amazing talents--from the Three-Legged Man, Bearded Lady, and Dog Boy to the Geek, Living Venus de Milo, and Reptile Man! But just behind the curtain, an even more astonishing tale is about to unfold…

VIOLET & DAISY HILTON
Born in the early 20th century connected at the spine, these beautiful conjoined sisters were immediately given up for adoption, only to be put on display at a young age in pubs, circuses, and music halls. Violet is sensitive and hesitant--she seeks a life of privacy and quietude. Daisy is bold and flirtatious--she longs for riches and glamour. Both possess the gift of song and dance.

SIR AND JAKE
A carnival balloon salesman turned cruel side show manager, Sir raised and exploited the twins with their adoptive mother. Even though they're now adults, he continues to treat them as his personal property. Sir's compassionate assistant Jake, however, tries to protect Violet and Daisy from further manipulation and abuse, while secretly harboring affections for one of them.

TERRY CONNOR & BUDDY FOSTER
Enter Terry, an eager talent scout and press agent, and Buddy, a dapper vocal coach and dance man. Together, they're looking for a new vaudeville act and find it in Violet and Daisy. But success draws them closer to the twins than expected. Does Buddy love Violet for the right reasons? Is a risky operation the only way for Terry to have Daisy to himself? And what about Hollywood--will a movie career bring the twins even closer to their dreams?

MEET THE CREATIVE DREAM TEAM
(From interviews conducted by Shirley Fishman, Director of Play Development at La Jolla Playhouse)

BILL CONDON, DIRECTOR
Screenwriter of Chicago, film director of Dreamgirls, and Academy Award winner
"When I first saw Side Show on Broadway, I was immediately taken by it. There was something so original about it, the subject matter, the staging, sound of it, the power of the performances--it was a memorable event. What's so exciting is that there's the chance to revisit, re-investigate, and re-explore an inimitable theatrical experience, which is what we're doing on our Side Show 2.0. We've always been careful not to betray its essence, but to fill in some of the blanks, streamline, and raise new dramatic possibilities."

HENRY KRIEGER, MUSIC
Tony Awardnominated composer of Dreamgirls and Side Show, then and now
"Working with Bill Condon on the Dreamgirls movie was a wonderful and life-changing experience. As we finished our work together, I asked Bill if he would consider directing a stage musical. He replied ‘Would I ever' and I was thrilled to hear it. Bill's new imagining of Side Show is a deeply moving experience of which I am so happy to be a part."

BILL RUSSELL, BOOK & LYRICS
Tony Awardnominated book writer and lyricist of Side Show, then and now
"When we met at the theater to prepare for the reading, Bill Condon came in with a stack of books and scripts. He brought up songs we had no recollection of writing. I never think that anything is ever so set in stone that it can't be looked at again. [We are re-examining] every syllable and note--I'm not kidding! It's been hard work, but thrilling."
