About
Shaw, an actress drawn to characters who fall between the stools of morality, delivers a moving portrayal of the grief-stricken wife, whose hurt, pride and love for Jason tears her in two, and the murderous Medea wreaks havoc. After poisoning her husband's betrothed and the king, she slays both her children to spite Jason, leaving him without family and future.
Warner's version of Medea is chillingly statisfying to watch, as Fiona Shaw takes her character from anger and terrified indecision to murderous rage. The modern script and dress offer a new edge to the Greek tragedy. Fiona Shaw presents Medea as neither mad nor monstrous, but as a witty and intelligent woman who has been pushed to her very limit.
