About
In the electric calm of a blue-painted room, just hours before
her death on the opening day of her first and only exhibition
in Mexico City, painter Frida Kahlo reflects upon a life of
passion and strugglewith love, with the body, with her
country, and most of all, with her art. In this collaboration
between Quebeçois playwright Sophie Faucher, who also portrays
Kahlo, internationally acclaimed director Robert Lepage applies
the latest computer/projection technologies to blend a small
cast of live performers and Kahlo’s flamboyant, highly charged
canvases. Like Kahlo herself, they create striking images of
magical realism out of the volcanic sensuality and emotion that
marked this fascinating artist’s life. Following an extensive
European tour, where La Casa Azul (formerly titled Apasionada-Que viva Frida) was played in French, Neil Bartlett, artistic
director of London’s Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, translated
the work into English and the world premiere of the English
language production was given there on October 11, 2002.
