About

An evening of works by three companies

Guangdong Modern Dance Company
Beijing Modern Dance Company
City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong)
Willy Tsao, Artistic Director

An art form that has only been evolving in China for the past 25 years, modern dance has overcome deeply entrenched aesthetic traditions to become one of the country's most popular and exciting cultural expressions. Hong Kong choreographer Willy Tsao leads three distinguished ensembles--including Beijing Modern Dance Company, with which Tsao was associated for six years--in a program of their most acclaimed works.

Guangdong Modern Dance Company, China's first professional modern dance company, is celebrated for its "dynamic range, amazing athletic thrust, and contained elegance" (The New York Times). The ensemble performs Liu Qi's Upon Calligraphy, a series of vignettes in which dancers use their bodies to replicate the exacting brush strokes and many exquisite scripts in Chinese calligraphy. Beijing Modern Dance Company presents All River Red, an avant-garde work choreographed by husband-and-wife team Li Hanzhong and Ma Bo that adapts Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring to represent the clash between conformity and radical thought. City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong) makes its Washington debut with Silver Rain, which weaves together scenes from works by Willy Tsao and other acclaimed Hong Kong choreographers including Helen Lai, Pun Siu-fai, Mui Cheuk-yin, and Yuri Ng.
