Renée Fleming has been called "America's soprano of choice" by the New York Times. And the Washington Post praises her for "consistently filling the world's opera houses with her golden voice." Now the two-time Grammy winner and Kennedy Center favorite returns for a rare concert performance of Richard Strauss's stunning one-act opera based on Greek mythology.
Daphne, the beautiful mortal daughter of the Peneios River and the earth goddess Gaea, is torn between amorous advances from her childhood playmate and the god Apollo--forcing her to choose among man, god, and the natural world. This lyrical and masterfully structured work overflows with some of Strauss's most ravishing arias and richly textured ensemble scenes.
