About
Farida and the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble in Iraq: the Maqams and Songs of Nostalgic
The Iraqi Maqam Ensemble with maqam singer Farida Mohammad Ali is considered to be one of the most important in Iraq in reviving the Iraqi maqam, a musical genre based on the succession of vocal parts, the sequence of modes, and the use of rhythms and poetic form according to an order established by old Arabic musical traditions.
Malouma in Gamly
From Mauritania, Malouma plays music that is a mix of traditional and modern sounds, a melding of western styles to the Moorish music of the Sahara and adding electric guitars to traditional instruments such as the four-stringed, lute-like tidinit.
