About
The world's largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a crucible for the creation of new and experimental work, a place where talent is often unveiled. The Kennedy Center's ON THE FRINGE: Eye on Edinburgh celebrates the spirit of artistic entrepreneurship that exists in Edinburgh each summer in a showcase of some imaginative new work from that fertile environment. Presentations include theater, free performances on the Millennium Stage, performance art, and installations in the public spaces of the Center.
Hailing from Birmingham, England, Stan's Cafe Theatre Company brings five tons of rice to the Kennedy Center for the internationally acclaimed performance installation Of All the People in All the World. In this version created specifically for the Center, each grain of rice represents a person in the United States. The UK's The Telegraph calls the installation "ingenious," while the Guardian hailed it as "one of the most memorable pieces of the year" in 2008.
Over the course of one week, Artistic Director James Yarker and a team of performers/attendants clad in brown lab coats meticulously weigh this rice out onto sheets of white paper to represent an array of human statistics, which may include the populations of towns and cities, the number of doctors, the number of soldiers, the number of people born each day, the number who die, and all the people who have walked on the moon. Patrons are invited to compare "their" one grain to the millions of grains that they are not. When brought together to create a shifting sculptural landscape, these hills and mountains start to tell powerful stories of the world, its struggles, challenges, and triumphs.
