About

Founded in 1952, the Beijing People's Art Theatre, China's premier professional theater company, has largely shaped modern Chinese theater. They will perform one of their best known plays, Top Restaurant (1988), by contemporary playwright He Jiping. Top Restaurant has been revived numerous times in the past two decades, having run for more than a total of 500 performances, and even been made into a television drama. By capturing the culinary culture of Peking--its famous roast duck--Top Restaurant is a tale of inheritance versus ingenuity. Who is ultimately responsible for running a successful business? The two squabbling sons of the founding restaurateur, or the manager whose sharp acumen built it into the city's most popular eatery after years of sweat and labor? Returning to the Center after their 2005 Festival of China performance of Teahouse, Beijing People's Art Theatre tells this tale rich with comedy and insight. In Chinese with English supertitles.  Note:  Strong language may be used.

CHINA: The Art of a Nation, a series on the arts and culture of China inspired by the Center's acclaimed Festival of China in 2005, revisits the flourishing arts of one of the 21st century's world powers with nearly 300 artists spanning all genres of the performing arts.
