Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo
Vasco Wellenkamp, Artistic Director
Fado, Rituals and Shadows
"Mr. Wellenkamp knows how to distill feeling and pour it out onstage."--The New York Times
Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo was founded in 1997 by Vasco Wellenkamp (formerly choreographer for the Gulbenkian Ballet) and Graça Barroso. Over the last 15 years, under the artistic direction of Wellenkamp, the company premiered more than 50 works and toured to Brazil, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, the United States, China, and Israel. Jan Linkens, Artistic Director for the Netherlands DansTheater, invited Vasco Wellenkamp to choreograph this work about fado, the national music genre of Portugal. The beautiful soundtrack featuring the voice of Carla Pires and the poetry of the fado that she sings represent a sense of abandonment and emotion, a ritual without time or defined characters.
Performed to a soundtrack featuring the beautiful voice of Portuguese fado singer Carla Pires, Fado, Rituals and Shadows enjoyed its world premiere in November 2013. Surrounded by obscure geometries that suggest the shadowy alleys and taverns of Lisbon, dancers surrender to pure abandonment to create a timeless ritual of movement and song representing the pain of life's uncertainty, a soaring cry for freedom, and the desire to fly away. Raves Dance Europe Magazine: "The 12 dancers on stage gave a passionate performance, with moments of extreme beauty."
