Not only did Mohandas Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore influence India for all time, they influenced each other. Between 1915, the year Gandhi landed in India from South Africa, and 1941, the year of Tagore's death, the Mahatma and the poet exchanged letters, debated, and discussed issues in person, as well as in the pages of the two journals they edited: Young India (Gandhi) and Modern Review (Tagore). Ashis Nandy and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, scholars and authors of early 20th century Indian history, recapture the conversation between these two powerful figures.
