Andrew Litton, conductor
Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano

Jean-Yves Thibaudet is often described as one of the finest pianists in the world, and he brings his artistry and stylish playing to the jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in G major of Maurice Ravel. Ravel, who had recently toured America, said that "the most captivating part of jazz is its rich and diverting rhythm." Andrew Litton--whose relationship with the National Symphony goes back to 1982--will open the program with Rossini's Overture to William Tell. If the Ravel Concerto contains a veneer of Americana from Ravel's travels, the Overture to William Tell does also, but not one Rossini ever intended. Appropriated by the television series The Lone Ranger, the trumpet fanfare from the Overture's finale evokes the Wild West. The second half of the program is devoted to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.
