Detroit High School for the Fine & Performing Arts

Detroit High School for the Fine & Performing Arts (Detroit, MI) presents “A Tribute to Miss Dunham,” a dance program dedicated to the pioneering spirit and cultural contributions of Katherine Dunham, and “The Many Faces of Music,” a choral program that incorporates spirituals, folk songs, vocal jazz, and classical vocal art selections. While students at Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts (DSA) attend three classes daily in their major arts studies along with their five academic courses, their artistic experiences spread far beyond the school grounds. The high school’s performing groups travel around the world to cities such as Toronto, ON; London, England; New York, New York; Chicago, IL; and New Orleans, LA. As a result of a parent–initiated writing activity, instrumental music students wrote and were awarded a $30,000 grant to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall. DSA students also use their knowledge of culture and the arts within their own community.
