Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa (The Kennedy Center)

Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa

Although based on the music of Nigeria's Yoruba tribe, Toby Foyeh's compositions encompass sounds from around the world. It is a fusion of traditional African music with jazz, rock, pop and Latin rhythms — creating a musical melting pot. This is “Afrijam music”. Foyeh and his Orchestra perform with a range of instruments — everything from the Gangan (“talking drum”) to the Kalimba (“thumb piano”) as well as more modern keyboards and guitars — all accompanied by a chorus of female voices. In the spirit of the oral traditions of the Yoruba, the evening's music will tell many stories.
