Gafieira Dance

Gafieira Dance Brasil is a project of legendary Brazilian clarinet/saxophone player (and Grammy Award winner) Paulo Moura and the American jazz pianist Cliff Korman. The two have a long-standing association dating back some 15 years, and have collaborated on numerous projects, performances and recordings. Hosting some of the most famous and talented practitioners of the genre, Gafieira Dance Brasil was conceived as an international project to preserve and promulgate the rich musical legacy in music and dance of the gafieira dance halls of Rio de Janeiro. Perhaps less familiar than samba or bossa nova to audiences outside of Brazil, gafieira is wildly popular in Brazil, particularly in Rio, where it is a vibrant tradition. The term "gafieira" was coined at the beginning of the 20th century to describe the dance halls of the working class neighborhoods of Rio.
