Hesperus

Hesperus, named for Venus and the West Wind, creates a synthesis of living and historic musical traditions by exploring the cultural parallels between the Old World and the new. Founded in 1979, the group comprises several ensembles with overlapping membership. They collectively perform Baroque and American Colonial music, Spanish and Native American works from New Spain, and a crossover style that combines European medieval and renaissance music with traditional American folk styles. New programs include Classical Blues, early and traditional blues from Machaut to Gershwin; Early Music from Eastern Europe; Neo-Medieval, medieval improvisations for the millennium; Istampita, a virtuoso medieval trip; and Celtic Roots with Scottish fiddler Bonnie Rideout. Hesperus continues to perform frequently at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History where it was an ensemble in residence from 1989 to 1996.
