Susan McKeown (The Kennedy Center)

Susan McKeown

Susan McKeown grew up in Dublin, Ireland, the youngest of five children. Encouraged by her composer mother, McKeown pursued music and theater interests from an early age. Religious and classical music was what she listened to as a child, but as a teenager she discovered singers like Mary Margaret O’Hara, Michelle Shocked, and June Tabor. At fifteen she began intensive study with Ireland’s leading opera trainer, but left after a year, realizing opera was not for her. Busking on Dublin’s streets followed, where McKeown explored rock, folk, jazz, and blues.
