Oliver Mtukudzi

“Tuku,” as he is best known to his fans, Oliver Mtukudzi has enjoyed a professional music career that has spanned over twenty years and produced 41 original albums, most of them best-sellers. But it is his dedication to the “live” music scene in Zimbabwe that has earned him the respect and place in the people’s hearts that he holds today. Tuku was initiated into the world of music in 1977 when he joined the now legendary Wagon Wheels, which also featured Thomas Mapfumo. Success came to them early; their first single rapidly went gold, and this was followed by Tuku’s first album on four track which was also a smash hit. In October 1995, Tuku was selected to represent Zimbabwe at the SADC Music Festival staged in Harare, followed by the MASA Festival in Abidjan in 1996.
