Jean Grae

Critically acclaimed lyricist, producer, writer, director, cinematographer, and all around consummate entertainer Jean Grae has been challenging the boundaries of artistry since her debut in 1996. Whether creating music with imaginative narratives that immerse the listener in a dark world of Grae’s design, or spilling her most personal stories of love and life experiences, she always delivers an honest performance that strikes the most vulnerable parts of her audience and keeps them wondering, “what will she do next?” Well into an almost 20-year-long career that maintains not only relevancy, but continues to push the envelope of perception, marketing, and branding, Grae has worked alongside Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Pharoahe Monch, and many more. Grae recently made her directorial debut and created her company KAGD. With videos for The Hellpit Faeries, Talib Kweli, and herself under her belt, she created Life with Jeannie, a half hour sitcom, written, directed by, and starring Grae. The multi-talented visionary, DJ, founder, and CEO of Black Girls Rock!, Beverly Bond collaborates with the Kennedy Center to present Rock Like a Girl, a signature Bond-Vision Media™ production that celebrates women’s contributions to the art and culture of hip-hop. The program includes performances by a diverse group of female artists from around the world, including legendary rap artist MC Lyte, critically acclaimed lyricist Jean Grae, Grammy Award–winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari, French Chilean MC Ana Tijoux, North Carolina MC Rapsody, a special appearance by the multi-talented Grammy Award–winning MC, singer, and song-writer Ms. Lauryn Hill, and other special guests! D.C.’s own all-girl go-go band, Be’la Dona, serves as the house band with DJ Beverly Bond on the ones-and-twos. Together, these women show what it means to “rock like a girl.” Please join us for a post-show discussion with artists, academics, and activists that encourages dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media.
