Riga Dom Boys Choir

The Riga Dom Cathedral Boys Choir was first established in Latvia in 1950. Since 1994 the boys have been part of the Riga Dom Choir School. The choir consists of 45 treble singers (soprano, alto) and 15 professional male singers (tenor, bass). As of 1993 the choir has recorded 21 solo CDs and participated in several recording co-projects. The last recorded CD is J.

The Riga Dom Cathedral Boys Choir was first established in Latvia in 1950. Since 1994 the boys have been part of the Riga Dom Choir School. The choir consists of 45 treble singers (soprano, alto) and 15 professional male singers (tenor, bass).

As of 1993 the choir has recorded 21 solo CDs and participated in several recording co-projects. The last recorded CD is J. S. Bach’s Motets in 2007. In 2009 this CD was nominated in Latvia for the best recording of 2008. The CD Odi Et Amo (2000), in collaboration with Latvian contemporary composer Ugis Praulins, was named the best recording of 1999 in Latvia.

In 2001 the choir received Latvia’s Great Music Award - the highest award of the Culture Ministry in Latvia. In 2009 the choir was again nominated for the Great Music Award for its performance of Bach’s “Christmas Oratorium” in December 2008. In March 2010 their performance of “Joan of Arc at the Stake” by A. Honegger, in which the boys’ choir participated, also received the Great Music Award.

President Bill Clinton, the presidents of Finland, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Turkey, Prince Charles, and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom and participants of the NATO summit (2006) have all enjoyed performances by the choir. The choir’s concert tours have been highly acclaimed.

The choir regularly collaborates with the concert organization “Latvijas koncerti” and under their guidance has appeared at such festivals as Restart Bach (2006, 2007), Mozart Music Festival (2006), Sacral Music, Easter Music, and Europe Christmas. Eesti Kontsert organized concert tours for the choir to Estonia in 2002 and 2007, and for the past 13 years regularly organizes concert tours to Japan.

The choir participates in international sacred music festivals as well. They appeared at the 2009 Lucerne Festival in Switzerland; the 2006 de La Chaise-Dieu festival in France; and the Legnano Sacral music festival in Italy in 2005. That same year, Riga Dom Cathedral Boys Choir represented Latvia during the Latvian Culture days in France.

The Boys Choir regularly takes part in performances by the Latvian National Opera. Currently the choir or its soloists are performing in Carmen, Queen of Spades, Magic Flute, Toska, Otello, Verter, and Latvian contemporary composer’s Janis Lusens’ Birds’ Opera for children. The boys also participated in the play Dreadnoughts.

The U.S. tour in May and June 2010 highlights the choir’s 60 years of musical excellence. The choir performs choral classics, music of the twentieth century, and Latvian folk songs.
