Cheikha Rimitti

All young Rai singers consider Rimitti the mother of the genre. The lady has charmed the European audience for years with her bittersweet languorous voice and her achieved dancing. Hennaed hair, sequined clothes, jewellery, sighing, moaning and panting are all ingredients of her over-expressive performance. Rimitti has performed on every main western stage, including Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam, Brussels, Stockholm, Oslo, Lisbon, Geneva, and the US, where she triumphed in a one date only performance last year. Cheikha Rimitti remains the living evidence of a paradoxical society and a fervent champion of true Rai, a music with a voice and guts.
