Upstart Aussies (The Kennedy Center)

Upstart Aussies

Aboriginal storyteller Pauline McLeod weaves the Dreamtime tales of her people through the music and dance of Upstart Aussies, as the history and humor of the First People of Australia comes to life on the stage. In this extraordinary show, the traditional and contemporary blend with the energy of Bibayungen, a dance troupe of young people of the Djabugay; legendary performer and winner of indigenous artist of the year, Kerrianne Cox; Mettaphor; and comic band Odd Girl Out. Clapsticks (Bilma), didgeridoo (Yidaki), guitars, drums and saxophone guide the pulse of the people through tales of Rainbow Serpent, Songlines (Yiri) and Dreamtime (Jukurpa) to colonization and the stolen generations, and finally toward reconciliation.
