Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra

During its not-quite two year stint, the Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra has recorded five CDs – two full-length and three CD singles, been the subject of three television segments, performed on a concert tour to Italy, been invited to the White House, released its first DVD, won four international awards and has been invited to perform in conjunction with the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. This coming season, the Virginia Youth Symphony will record a television score, perform in conjunction with the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, film a music video at the Acropolis in Lindos, Greece, and perform at Carnegie Hall in 2005. Music Director/Principal Conductor Robert Ian Winstin is an award-winning composer/conductor and pianist, who began his musical studies at the piano at the age of five. He is now recognized as one of the leading conductor/composers of his generation, and has been awarded numerous prizes and honors for his works, including a Joseph Jefferson Citations Wing Recommendation for his score to Oedipus Requiem, the Barrettson Prize in American Music for his Piano Concert #1 and several ASCAP awards. Winstin is equally at home composing for the theater, opera, symphony orchestra and chamber works.
