Rooted in Irish and Celtic traditions, Whirligig, which was formed in 1994, infuses its music with a variety of influences and sounds from many other genres, and the group employs a wide range of instruments, including fiddle, bouzouki, mandolin, guitar, uilleann pipes and whistles.
As a multi-instrumentalist playing in a wide variety of musical genres, and as a producer and arranger, Greg Anderson has worked with such diverse artists as Richard Shindell, Tommy Sands, Susan McKeown and the Chanting House, Peter Knight, The Klezmatics, Itzhak Perlman, and a host of others.
A native New Yorker, Lisa Gutkin has performed and recorded with a vast number of international artists, including Tommy Sands, Christine Lavin, Peter Knight, Jane Siberry, Gabriel Yacoub, Elizabeth Swados, and others, as well as a variety of bluegrass bands, symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles.
Paul Kovit was a founding member of several new-traditional bands, such as Nightsong, Soldier's Fancy, and Idle Rumours. He is perhaps best known through his association with the group Fairport Convention, on stage and as a producer/director of the Fairport documentary film, ôIt All Comes æRound Again.ö
Matt Darriau is a multi-reed and flute player, as equally at home in Celtic music as he is in Balkan, jazz and klezmer styles. He is an active composer/musician in a number of other bands such as The Klezmatics, Les Miserables Brass Band, and his own Paradox Trio. He has worked with Charlie Haden, David Byrne, Dillon Bustin, Oliver Lake, Seamus Egan, and Itzhak Perlman.
Jerry OÆSullivan has been widely hailed as AmericanÆs premier uilleann piper. His reputation for technical and melodic mastery of the instrument is unsurpassed in the United States, and is demanding considerable attention overseas. He has appeared on over 60 albums, and he has also widely recorded on the flute, tin whistle, low whistle, Highland bagpipes, and Scottish small pipes.
Lisa Moscatiello made her first foray into Celtic music at age 15 as a singer with the D.C. area trio Ceoltoiri. Most recently she was lead vocalist with the folk-rock band The New St. George, with whom she received 19 Washington Area Music Awards. She also won awards for her debut solo album, ôInnocent When you Dream,ö which was released in 1996.
