The work of British director Stephen Lawless (Director) was last seen at WNO in Anna Bolena (2012). He made his WNO debut in L’elisir d’amore (1997, revived in 2006), and has also directed productions of Boris Godunov (1999), Il trovatore (2000 and 2004), Vanessa (2002), and The Flying Dutchman (2008). From 1986 to 1991, he was director of production for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera, where his work culminated in an immensely successful production of Death in Venice which was subsequently recorded by the BBC for television and video release. The production was revived at the 1992 Glyndebourne Festival. He made his debut with the Kirov Opera in Leningrad producing Boris Godunov which was broadcast live on British television, the first ever live telecast of an opera from the Soviet Union to the U.
