Mary Lorson (The Kennedy Center)

Mary Lorson

In 1991 I was living in Brooklyn, writing songs, making demos with my friends, and planning to assemble a band which I hoped would bridge the gap between Chrissie Hynde and Lucinda Williams. I had a few good songs and was beginning to sense a direction, when a friend introduced me to Billy Coté, who said he’d written some songs and had a vision for a band called Madder Rose. I decided to try it out for a while. We made some demos, played some gigs, and had an offer from Atlantic Records. Things almost never transpire in this way! Releasing four albums, Madder Rose toured the US and Europe many times, enjoying special attention in the UK, where we recorded two Peel Sessions and headlined the Melody Maker stage at the 1993 Reading Festival.
