Asian American Music Society

The Asian American Music society (AAMS) was founded in 1989 as an organization dedicated to the continued appreciation of all music.  AAMS has performing members, regular members, an executive committee and a board of directors representing China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and other Asian American cultures.  AAMS supports the Asian Pacific American Council (APAC), the Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC), and the National Association of Professional Asian American Women (NAPAW) functions, as well as other Asian embassy events to promote cultural diversity by blending eastern and western styles, and creating opportunities for musicians from all corners of the world.  AAMS produced the world premiere Chinese contemporary opera Lang-Ying for the Asian Song Festival and Asian Chamber Music Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Asian American Heritage Month celebration, as well as the Lunar New Year Festival.  They have performed at NASA, GSA, NIH, HUD, FDA and the Japanese and Korean Embassies during past Asian American Heritage Months.

The Asian American Music Society and the Embassy of Indonesia present an evening of Indonesian gamelan music (gongs, stringed instruments, wooden xylophone, bronze kettles, and drums on carved teakwood frames) and a shadow puppet show in which finely carved and decorated puppets are illuminated behind a white screen by a puppet-master.
