Genesis at the Crossroads presents Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble

The Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble, led by Hicham Chami, consists of professional musicians from nine different countries (the United States, Morocco, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Syria, India, Russia, and France). The ensemble performs traditional instrumental and vocal music from Arabic, Sephardic, Egyptian, Levantine, Turkish, and Armenian repertoire. The Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble had its debut performance in 2003 at the Oriental Institute in Chicago, for a celebration of the opening of the Edgar and Deborah Jannotta Mesopotamian Gallery. The ensemble was highlighted with the Anda-El East West Orchestra for the first Genesis at the Crossroads summer festival, “From the Middle East to the Midwest,” in August 2004. For the festival's final performance showcasing Andalusian music, they accompanied world-renowned soloists Lior El Malich from Israel and Munshid Abdelfattah Bennis of Morocco for a highly acclaimed United States tour: first in Chicago and then to standing ovations in Washington, D.
