Andrew Luse

Andy Luse began studying piano at the age of eight. At 10 he performed his first concerto, the Piano Concerto in D Major by Haydn, with the New England Youth Ensemble under the baton of Francisco de Araujo. He went on to solo with this orchestra several times over the next few years performing numerous piano concerti including the Keyboard Concerto in D minor by Bach, Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor by Mozart, Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor by Beethoven, and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy.

Andy Luse began studying piano at the age of eight. Mr. Luse attended Princeton University where he earned a B.A. in History and a Certificate in Music Performance. As a freshman, he won the University Concerto Competition and performed the Double Piano Concerto in E-Flat Major with the Princeton University Orchestra. He received his Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

Mr. Luse’s teachers include Francisco de Araujo, Maribeth Gowen, Brian Ganz, Julian Martin, and Zitta Zohar. He has performed in Master Classes for Gary Graffman, Ivan Moravec, and the Brentano String Quartet.

Mr. Luse was a participant in the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the New Millenium Piano Festival in Spain. Mr. Luse is currently an Artist in Residence at Strathmore, a performing arts complex in the Washington D.C. area.

Si-Yan Darren Li made his first professional debut performing the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto at the age of nine. Since then, he has appeared in solo recitals and chamber music performances in renowned concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall and 92nd Street Y in New York, Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the Beijing Concert Hall, Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, Izumi Hall in Osaka, and National Concert Hall in Taipei. In November 2004, Mr. Li made his solo debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall. He has toured as a soloist in North America, Europe and Asia.

Mr. Li has received top prizes and awards in numerous competitions, including the 2003 Young Concert Artists (YCA) International Auditions in New York, the Young Artists Competition of Mann Center for Performing Arts in Philadelphia, the International Master Class Audition at the World Cello Congress III in Baltimore, the Kennett Symphony Instrumentalists’ Competition, the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music Cello Competition, the Second China National Cello Competition as well as the scholarship award from the Matinee Music Club of Philadelphia. At the age of twelve, Mr. Li made his first international appearance and attracted public attention as one of the youngest prizewinners at the Tchaikovsky International Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow, Russia.

Mr. Li has also appeared in many festivals, including the Ravinia Festival in 2001 and 2002, where he collaborated with Miriam Fried. In 2001, he was a participant at the 5th Kronberg Academy Cello Festival in Germany, where he worked with Truls Mørk and Young-Chang Cho. In the summer of 2005, Mr. Li was selected to participate at the Verbier Festival & Academy, where he was also chosen to perform as one of the soloists at the Verbier Academy’s Finale Concert.

Si-Yan Darren Li began his cello studies at the age of five in China. At the age of nine, he was accepted to the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, where he studied cello with Chen Yuan and Situ Zhi-Wen. After moving to the United States in his early teens, Mr. Li continued his cello studies with Orlando Cole in Philadelphia. In 1998, he enrolled as a full-scholarship student of Fred Sherry at The Juilliard School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 2002. Recently, Mr. Li has been the first cellist since 1995 to be accepted into the prestigious Artist Diploma Program at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he is awarded the Piatigorsky Scholarship to study cello with David Hardy and Alan Stepansky. Mr. Li plays on a 1773 J.B.Guadagnini Cello, generously on loan from the private collection of Mr. and Mrs. Rin Kei-Mei.

Born in Vancouver, Valerie Li began studying the violin at the age of four at the Vancouver Academy of Music. Miss Li won numerous scholarship competitions at the Academy, where she received her Performer’s Certificate at the age of eighteen. She won first prize awards provincially at the British Columbia Festival of the Arts, as well as nationally at the 1996 National Music Festival of Canada, where her quartet won first prize in Chamber Music when she was fifteen. In 2000, she was awarded a British Columbia Arts Council Award and grant to help fund her studies at the Peabody Conservatory. At Peabody, she won the Marbury Prize Violin Competition and the J.C. von Hulsteyn Award. She graduated at the top of her class with a Bachelor of Music in 2003 and went on to pursue her Master’s at the New England Conservatory. During both years that she attended NEC, her quartet was chosen to perform in the Gala Chamber Music Showcase in Jordan Hall.

Miss Li’s primary teachers have included Miriam Fried, Herbert Greenberg, and Gwen Thompson. She has performed in master classes by the Tokyo String Quartet, Pamela Frank, Elmar Oliviera, and Sydney Harth, and has studied chamber music with the Takacs, Juilliard, Vermeer, and Borromeo String Quartets and with William Preucil, Michael Tree, Robert McDonald, and others. She has been a fellow at Tanglewood Music Center and the Aspen Music Festival, and performed this past summer at the Taos Music Festival. In 2001 she performed at Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra. She gave solo performances at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 1995 and at Encore Summer Strings in 1997. In the summers of 1998 and 1999, Miss Li toured Europe and Canada with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, of which she was Concertmaster in 1999. She has also been Concertmaster of the Academy Symphony Orchestra in Vancouver, the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, and the New England Conservatory Philharmonia.
