Eivind Opsvik (The Kennedy Center)

Eivind Opsvik

One of the boldest, most exciting and eclectic jazz performers in New York City, Norwegian born bassist Eivind Opsvik blends a daring variety of progressive rock, classical, ambient and electronic influences—from Neil Young and Pink Floyd to Brian Eno—in creating Overseas III, the third and most compelling and thematically focused project to date by his four piece ensemble Overseas. The ensemble’s first recording Overseas I was released in 2003, followed by Overseas II in 2005.Beyond his work with Overseas, Opsvik’s experimental orchestral fusion collaboration with Aaron Jennings (Opsvik & Jennings) includes two well-received recordings, Fløyel Files (2005) and Commuter Anthems (2007). As an ensemble member, Opsvik plays regularly with the Kris Davis Quartet (free playing and classical); David Binney’s Out of Airplanes with guitarist Bill Frisell (electronic jazz); Tone Collector (a free improvising trio with Tony Malaby and Jeff Davis); Tony Malaby’s Paloma Recio (high energy free jazz); Rocket Engine (free spirited interpretations of musical heroes Black Sabbath); and the Ben Gerstein Collective. Opsvik recently also did a project with Jacob Sacks, viola player Mat Maneri and legendary drummer Paul Motian that has been released on Loyal Label.
