Kutztown University Jazz Ensemble

Kutztown University Jazz Studies features three full jazz ensembles and several coached combos. The faculty and visiting artists features some of the finest jazz performers in the country including bassist Scott Lee, who has performed and recorded with many of the legends in jazz including Chet Baker, Ornette Coleman, and Joe Lovano; drummer Allison Miller, among the best young drummers in the country in both jazz and popular music; Grammy winning guitarist David Cullen; saxophonist Adam Kolker, who has recorded recent Cds with Paul Motian and John Abercrombie; pianist Alan Apple, a walking encyclopedia of the great American songbook, and director of jazz ensembles Kevin Kjos. It is the aim of Jazz Studies at Kutztown University to give its students the most well-rounded jazz experience possible. Kutztown University Jazz Ensemble I performs large jazz ensemble music from both the golden era of swing and the modern era.  In 2007 the ensemble released Dance You Monster on Sea Breeze records featuring the music of modern composers Maria Schneider, Mark Buselli, and Jamie Simmons, and jazz legends  Duke Ellington, Pat Williams, and Ernie Wilkins.
